Originally known as Northwest Alaska Native Association, the name was officially changed to NANA. NANA is one of the 13 regional corporations formed by an act of Congress in 1971, to settle the Native Land Claims through ANCSA (Alaska Native Claim Settlement Act). NANA has over 40 affiliated businesses which employ more than 4,000 technical and service professionals in more than 30 industries. NANA is 100% owned by over 11,000 Inupiat Eskimos.

NANA employs 11% of the members of the Inupiat Eskimo Tribe who are of working age (ages 18-64).
In 2007, NANA paid $35.8 Million in total wages to Native American employees.
NANA provides over $300,000 in academic scholarships annually to Eskimo students.
NANA pays dividends to Inupiat Eskimo shareholders.
